on top of spaghetti …

spaghetti, philippine-style

… All covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.

It rolled off the table,
And on to the floor,
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled out of the door.

It rolled in the garden,
And under a bush,
And then my poor meatball,
Was nothing but mush.

The mush was as tasty
As tasty could be,
And then the next summer,
It grew into a tree.

The tree was all covered,
All covered with moss,
And on it grew meatballs,
And tomato sauce.

So if you eat spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
Hold on to your meatball,
Whenever you sneeze.

i loved this song when i was a kid. i used to hear it all the time on the radio, especially in the morning, and i really thought that it was possible to grow a spaghetti tree, LOL! that would have been great because then i wouldn’t have had to nag my mom about making me spaghetti. you know, it’s one of the very first things i learned to cook β€” because it’s my favorite dish. i used to eat it morning, noon and night … and sometimes as a snack. i always loaded it up with kraft cheddar cheese.

then i moved here and got exposed to other meat sauces and started really liking the italian bolognese and i began straying away from the sweet philippine version β€” until the jollibee opened in queens and i got a taste of that again πŸ˜› now, i make two versions, depending on my mood: the italian version with herbs (oregano, marjoram) and pan-roasted garlic or the philippine version with hotdogs and sugar πŸ˜€

    i have never heard that song πŸ™‚ if it was on sesame street (or kaluskos musmos), i sure would have πŸ™‚

    i have yet to meet a filipino child who didn't like spaghetti. it's like what our parents invented to shut us up πŸ™‚ (but in your case it didn't, because you wanted more) πŸ˜€

    i also had that “italian sauce” phase in my spaghetti-eating life. but somehow, i always yearn for the sweet-tasting sauce we grew up with. did i tell you when i was away studying i ate spaghetti almost every night for dinner? like you i'll cook a meat sauce good for a week (ground beef, garlic, mushrooms, and a good chunky sauce that came with all the spices) and then just get a portion for it to be heated with the pasta. what i miss are the good cheeses there. but again, nothing beats kraft cheddar or eden quickmelt πŸ™‚

    and yeah, the philippine-style spaghetti is perfect with either kraft or eden. it's sweet/salty combination that really makes it work πŸ™‚

    just unearthed your last comment about what we did before we had youtube, google, and FB. we actually had LIVES! and real social interaction with the people around us, family included! πŸ˜€ i'm going on vacation this weekend in a faraway, mystic island and part of me wants to bring my laptop since i was informed that the resort has wi-fi. but better reasoning (at least as of now) is telling me i should just bring a book instead. let's see how this goes. πŸ™‚
