desperately craving sisig

the growing styrofoam city in the refrigerator is testatement to the crazy shedule i’ve been keeping the last several days. no homecooked meal for moi, just take-out and fast-food. been trying to be healthy at least in the morning by having oatmeal. anyway, recently i went to max’s restaurant and decided to try the chicken sisig. you know me, i love sisig. i used to send for sisig from luring’s when i was still in kilo. so  i was very excited to taste the sisig — until i opened the container. the first question that came to mind when i opened the container was: why does it look like a chicken salad? there was cream, or something creamy! i don’t think i’ve seen that in a sisig. still, i decided to give it a try and … *shrug, it tasted like a slightly sour chicken salad with a dash of chili. quite disappointing.

oh, you don't even want to get me started on their pancit palabok.

actually you do. the sauce had no taste, it was like “gogo” (starch used for ironing) with yellow food color. there was 1 shrimp in the whole serving. one freakin' small shrimp. some crushed chicharon and a couple of lemon slices. and that was for $8.95 *sigh … i suddenly missed the palabok in betis. the one they serve/sell in an old-fashioned, philippine tray (igu).

fortunately, the crispy pata was really good so my annoyance eased a little. the meat was coming off the bone and was rather tasty. anyway, now i know what to order (and avoid) at max's. definitely go with the chicken, pancit canton and crispy pata and avoid at all cost the sisig and palabok.

interesting. those have always been max's specialties. i guess this give credence to the saying that just keep on doing what you do best.
