all chicken all the time

you already know i was a picky eater as a kid. the only thing i ate was chicken — fried chicken. i think that’s why i enjoyed mischievous niknok from funny komiks. his nickname was “niknok manok.” my love for chicken hasn’t gone away, but these days there are a lot more chicken dishes to choose from. like the one above: it’s basically a roast from a place called caravan chicken in astoria, queens. they don’t have a website, but here’s their yelp page. as you can see, most reviewers think the roast chicken is pretty good, especially with the mysterious green sauce (shown here already spread over the chicken). i’ve heard it described as a cilantro and garlic sauce. i always thought it was sort of diluted mustard *shrugs.

this next one is similar to the hainanese chicken rice dish you’ve posted about before. here it’s called chicken soy sauce. i think the chicken is steamed, not roasted. an order usually comes with a sweet soy sauce dipping and a tiny tub of minced ginger in oil. i love mixing the ginger with the rice. gives the chicken a more complex flavor.

after our visit to the top of the empire state building, our friend C and i went to a korean restaurant as well — kyochon. this place specializes in chicken. i didn't take photos because i thought i had posted about it before (apparently not, i only blogged about the pickled radish).
