my parents sent me back to long island with almost a dozen champagne mangoes from the fil-am store in jersey city. unfortunately, the two i sliced open first weren’t quite ripe yet — a bit too tart. so what do you do when life hands you sour mangoes? you make mango granita! i scooped out the meat, dumped it in a blender, added three tablespoons of sugar and 1 1/2 cup of water and gave it a whir. then i poured the mixture in a plastic container and froze it, giving it a stir every hour or so. the result is soooooo good. and healthful, too! i’ll put this up against your melon granita.
