A visit to a Fil-Am grocery is a dangerous thing. I always end up buying more stuff than I need. Like a bag of Oishi prawn crackers. Or a can of Reno liver spread. Or ube-flavored Selecta ice cream. Or a bag of Curly Tops.
Do you remember these? I’m sure you do, even though they look nothing like the ones we enjoyed as kids. If memory serves me correctly, they came in flat boxes. And instead of being wrapped in foil, they use to be in thin yellow paper cups, right? They also used to have actual curly tops. These ones have Ricoah, the maker’s name, stamped on top. They still taste the same, though. Kinda waxy with just a hint of chocolate. I’ve tasted and enjoyed much better quality chocolate — from artisanal shops in Manhattan to chocolatiers abroad — but none of those bring back happy memories of my Apu returning from the market with these treats for me.
