aussie/english meat pie

in your recent post on tortang talong you brought up the “aristocarts” (ambulant/cart food vendors) and i remembered a similar one we tried in sydney in a trip last year. it’s the iconic “harry’s cafe de wheels,” but i think it’s been so successful the wheels haven’t moved for quite some time now πŸ™‚ i had been looking forward to try their meat pie because the food network host anthony bourdain (you know i’m a fan of his work) tried it and found it good. it so happened that our good friend, who was also our host, had made sure it was in our itinerary. the outlet we went to was somewhere within the cbd, and i think it was the same one that bourdain tried.

so what is my verdict on the famous meat pie? i tried their “harry’s tiger,” their signature dish invented by their founder harry “tiger” edwards. the truth is, it needed more salt, ha.ha. but otherwise, how could you go wrong with a meat pie in an edible bowl of mashed potatoes, mushy peas, beef and gravy. from afar it actually looks like a sweet pie with ice cream, green tea or avocado mush, and chocolate sauce. but a savory pie it is, and a good one at that. not amazing for me, but good. too bad we weren’t able to try to other pies as we were stuffed from eating through the city. maybe next time πŸ™‚

i've looked at that picture over and over again and i still can't wrap my head around it πŸ˜› are the mushy peas fried? is the meat inside the soup/sauce that looks like chocolate? i guess you eat it like a bread bowl, huh? finish the filling first before attacking the sides πŸ˜€ your friend definitely knows you for including this in your itenerary πŸ˜‰

ha.ha. when i first posted that pic in fb i got a lot of “what's that?” πŸ™‚ it does look interesting, doesn't it? like many interesting food finds, there's seems to be an art in devouring it. you eat from the outside in. get a bit of the mash, the mushy peas, the meat inside and the sauce that drips automatically. at the end you're left with the crust. i don't think the mushy peas were fried. just boiled and then mashed.
