this post started like a kevin-bacon-6-degrees-of-separation-game. i had been planning on another “culture”-related post because i looked at the blog stats and they are still so stacked for food and travel. last night i was watching a local t.v. show about wolves and vampires (yeah, something like twilight) and i saw vivian velez. this will age us but ms. velez was also known as ms. body beautiful. she was the quintessential bombshell of the 70s and she looks good until now. when i saw her again i remembered two films (one of which cannot be named here, besides it doesn’t have a title. he.he.). so i can name the other one instead — “pieta”, where she starred with action star ace vergel and played as his suffering mother.
then i remembered i had actually seen michelangelo’s pieta years ago and thought it was smaller than i had expected it to be, but not any less fascinating. this masterpiece is said to be the standard for sculptures until today and i have to agree — you can’t quite imagine that something as beautiful (and real and sad and… pitiful) like that was carved from a block of stone.
michelangelo’s other famous work, the statue of david, on the other hand, was was much bigger than i expected it. (it is said that he prepared it to be put atop the florence cathedral, hence the irregular proportions, especially of the limbs.) the real statue is now housed in the accademia gallery and another copy stands in its place in front of the city’s town hall. can you see the statue’s behind? it might as well have been copied from mine right? (ha.ha. i’m sure that tranny from times square will agree, despite your protestations) 😛

i would have called this post “vivian velez and michelangelo's version of body beautiful,” he he he 🙂 so how can a movie not have a title? and she played ace vergel's mother?!?!? wouldn't she have been too young for that? for some reason, i'm thinking they're of the same age, hmmm. oh, and talk about six degrees of separation — ace vergel is the uncle of a good friend of mine 🙂
you're right about the pieta, it feels more like a frozen moment, doesn't it, instead of something that was created by hand. i remember crying when i saw it and i don't think i've ever had that intense reaction to any piece of art.

re queen victoria, it's no wonder a whole era of prudeness takes after her name. do you think the oblation also has two hooks for the fig leaf, considering the victorian culture in the philippines? 😛

hmmm, don't remember anybody mentioning hooks on the oblation, but i would have been surprised (imagine the rallies!)
this reminds me of the time u.s. justice department workers purchased drapes to hide partially nude statues at the great hall. one of the statues was of a woman with one breast completely exposed. the other was of a man wearing a loincloth or something. apparently, john ashcroft didn't like being photographed in front of the nearly naked statues 😛 the drapes came down when alberto gonzales took over the post sometime in 2005.
